Our latest trip to GCRC had got me and the boys rethinking about CS options again, inspired by russ and the way they drift over there in the art of HIGH CS we were quick to decide on bringing CS back again, the extreme high angles at constant lock coupled with door to door tandems, it just looked so smooth and buttery, it kinda made miss the technical side of having to perfect CS technique .. korogashi, tobashi, keikobashi (rc-drift-super-techniques). But looking at the way these guys love HCS made me feel the same i felt when i would watch RWD youtube clips and just be in awe of the style back when i was doing CS.
Anyways enough rambling, lets get onto my new battle weapon of choice which is the RER HYBRID.
^
To achieve high cs anywhere between 2.5 - 3.5 on the rer we need to under drive the front and the secret to doing this was shown to me by jade over at GCRC, he had just acquired the same chassis and had already set it up for HCS, so a quick chat on what he did and a purchase of the exact parts need at there shop and i was closer to my goal. A 3racing 43t front pulley which had to be custom fitted was the maximum size that could fit in the front comes really close to the chassis, just enough room. :)
^
A 10t middle pulley from rc art, a 225 size belt was used(stock belt) but there was a little bit of slack so i had make a custom belt tensioner, i did try a 222 size belt but it was too tight and didn't wanna risk any damage, i'll be using a 9t later on just to slow the front a tad bit more, that should allow me to use the 222 size belt.
43 / 10 = 4.3 ratio
^
To under drive the front more here i used an rc art 17t middle pulley with a 15t rear stock pulley and using a stock belt.
17/15 = 1.13 ratio
the rest of the other gears for the front are 34/24 pinions = 1.41
now the rear gearing ratio is 40t spool gear and 17t small bevel gear
40/17 = 2.35
4.3 x 1.13 x 1.41 / 2.35 = 2.91 HCS ratio

For power i've decided on a 13.5t acuvance motor.
^
85t spur with a 22t size pinion gave me an FDR of about 11, you can also see that i've made use of some small weights for added rotational weight.
^
Here i've used the larger size Dlike hopping bones up front coupled with MST high angle shafts, i actually had to change out the outer knuckle bearing and chuck in a few shims inside the the knuckle behind the rear bearing just to make it fit just right.
^
This is the lock i was able to achieve, now at this angle on CS you gotta make sure that you grease up your cvd's otherwise you'll get some super bad wheel and shaft chattering, i found out the hard way, but luckily i didn't brake anything, but this makes for some good lock to lock angles.
^
My ackerman, how close to RWD can you get with CS lock.
^
10wt oil and RC926 super soft springs aren't too far off from my RWD settings, but i'll be playing around with some positions, i've also got a fairly stiff sway-bar installed. But i'll be dialing in a few more settings to get that rear end smooth and controlled since my rear end is swinging out more than my rwd.
^
I've keep most of my RWD front settings, although i had to decrease my track width as i was running a huge amount and if i felt i was getting too much front steering response, but i still kept it wider than the rear, my toe out settings stayed almost the same, i may play around with some different springs up front, but at the moment i'm running RC926 hard.
^
Overall i was quite happy with my first session of HCS but i can already feel the need to learn more, this is sparking a whole new level for me, but dont worry i'm not leaving RWD i'll be doing both, but i may look into building a specific HCS chassis.
^
Final thoughts for the rer!!
I loved it when it was in rwd mode and i still love it when its in HCS mode.
